As Thailand in the tropical zone, it is not questionable that we are in one of the hottest area of this earth. Additionally with the effect of Global Warming Effect, presently, heat protection is one of the most concern of persons who plan to have a new home or even the architects, and glass door and window are the important factor that we should consider carefully for the long term benefit.

 

How heat enters the house?

Yes, definitely, the heat from the sun and environment; such as, cars, air conditional, heat reflect from nearly buildings, etc. The heat is the energy wave that can get into your home through roof, wall, door and window. In this article, we will focus on door & window glasses which are the construction items that every house must have and the heat mainly enters from them.

As glass is the necessary construction materials that we cannot avoid and also with modern architectural design, glass is the main material which most designers use. Therefore, we could select the right glass that help reduce and prevent heat from entering the house. The two criteria that commonly use for choosing the right glass are Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) and U-Values.

What are SHGC and U-Values?

Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) is the fraction of solar radiation admitted through a window, door, or skylight -- either transmitted directly and/or absorbed, and subsequently released as heat inside a home. The lower the SHGC, the less solar heat it transmits and the greater its shading ability.

The U-Values measures how well the window in-sulates. While the U-Values can take any value, in general for windows it ranges from 0.20 to 1.20. The lower the U-Values, the better the window insulates.

By selecting the suitable SHGC and U-Values glass, you can save electricity bill from opening air-con and stay comfort. The basic idea for the glass structure in Thailand is the lower SHGC and U-Values, the better heat protection and being energy saving glass.
