How to choose the right glass thickness?

One of the classic problem when you want to choose the glass is “what should be the thickness of my glass?” Is it too thin and not strong enough? Or is it too thick and heavy for my application? In the lobby, the architect would prefer a big span of glass with less or non-framed installation for better scenario and view. But well, by this, you require more thick glass and come along with weights and costs. On the contrary, if you choose to save more cost by choosing the less thick glass, the design of glass span has to be narrow with more strip of frame and line that will block the outer view and scenario. This article will show the optimum point among your application, construction costs, safety and the glass thickness.

Standard glass thicknesses for door, window and partition are 3-19mm.

1.Cupboard door

This includes the glass door and window for kitchen cupboard and wardrobe. Typically, some function requires transparent for showing somethings inside, or in some cases, it needs nontransparent glass for covering the stuffs or showing pattern design. Regarding the proper glass thickness, if your design is frameless door, the minimum is 10 mm since the glass will act as the structure of the equipment. But if you use the door with metal or wood frame, the glass thickness can be 5-6 mm. The choice for cupboard door is very various and it could be Clear glass, Color glass, Pattern glass, Printed glass, Laminated glass and Mirror.

2.Shelf rack

With modern design, the glass can be applied as the shelf rack for outstanding design and differentiation. As the glass will be used to bear the load of your stuffs, it is better to use Tempered glass instead of Float glass due to the strength of the Tempered glass is 3 times better than normal float glass. The choice could be clear tempered or color tempered glass. The range of thickness is from 5 mm to 10 mm up to the weight of things that you expect to put on.

3.Door and Window

They are one of the most important parts of any buildings and houses. Door is used for entering and exist from the place and window is for air circulation and natural lighting. No any accommodations that can lack of them, and the glass is one of the most preferable choice for them. The popular glasses for this application are Tempered glass, Laminated glass, Color tinted glass, Energy saving and Sound insulation glass. Regarding the thickness, 6 mm and more glass is recommended for Framed door and window and 10 mm and more is for frameless door and window.

4.Table top

Not many people knowing that Tempered glass could be used as Table top, Counter top or even Kitchen top. You can fade away from typical design or environment by choosing Colorful coated tempered glass, Vivid printed tempered glass or Tinted color tempered glass as your new table top. The suitable thickness for table top is 6-12 mm Tempered glass. If you just to put the glass on your existing table (just for decoration), the choice is at least 6mm tempered glass. However, if you prefer to use the glass as the table itself (without any material) to support, the suitable choice is at least 12 mm tempered glass since the glass will act as the structure of the table itself.

5.Wall attachment

With nowadays modern trend, Wall Glass attachment is the popular choice besides simple wallpaper or ceramic tile. As today, we can print beautiful image or pattern on the glass, we can just simply attache the glass on the wall as similar to interior decoration. Anyway, we have to avoid wet or high humidity area, please consult our sales representative for the best decision choice. The general thickness for the Wall Glass attachment is around 5 mm to 8 mm.

6.Roof top

The last application that is also very popular among designers and home owners now is the Glass Roof top. With the benefit of natural lighting, stylish, modern and variety color. Now, we can find elegant Glass Roof top on many cafes, restaurants and houses. The recommended glass structure for this kind of application is Tempered Laminated Glass with 10 mm to 20 mm thickness. As safety is one of the most important factors for making a roof top, please consult the designer before choosing the right glass thickness and buildings structure. It is not recommended to choose the glass and its thickness by yourself or non-professional party.
